AET Biomass CHP Plant, district heating:
Linz-Mitte Energie-Anlage, Austria

18% of all district heating to the third-largest city of Austria; Linz, is served by a biomass fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

The biomass plant is built, owned and operated by Linz AG. Aalborg Energie Technik a/s supplied the CHP plant.

Biomass district heating reduces CO2 emission
The use of renewable energy sources to district heating reduces the emissions with approximately 50.000 CO2 ton/year in the area of Linz. The biomass plant fulfils the customers requirement of Linz AG of supplying green electricity and bio heating.

High CHP plant efficiency
The biomass plant also fulfils ecological and economical interests by a high biomass fuel efficiency of 85-87%.

The combined heat and power plant has an annual fuel input of 150.000 tons of forest wood waste and other uncontaminated wood and thereby ensuring that more than 18% of the district heating to the City of Linz is supplied from biomass.

AET turnkey contractor
As turnkey contractor, Aalborg Energie Technik a/s supplied the complete CHP plant as a package with the following main systems:

  • AET fuel dosing system
  • AET Combustion System Spreader Stoker with AET-Biograte
  • AET boiler with superheater, economizer and flue gas air preheater
  • AET over fire air system
  • Natural gas burner
  • Feed water system
  • Ash handling system
  • Bagfilter
  • Stack
  • Steam turbine
  • Condenser (district heating)

  • Electrical systems
  • PCL control and instrumentation
  • Piping and ducting
  • SCADA system
  • Insulation
  • Structural steel
