The Helius CoRDe plant in Rothes is a biomass fired cogeneration plant which is being built and will be operated by Helius CoRDe Ltd.
Helius CoRDe is the Joint Venture Company created by Helius Energy, the Combination of Rothes Distillers (CoRD) and Rabo Project Equity to develop, build, own and operate the proposed biomass CHP plant.
The plant will combust a combination of the whisky distillery by-product (draff) from the local area and wood chips in the boiler, generating 7.2 MWe – enough to supply 9.000 homes with electricity. Furthermore, the co-generation plant will supply approx. 12 t/h of process steam to an evaporation plant.
AET supply
On a turn key basis, AET designs, supplies, constructs and commissions the following scope of supply:
- Fuel reception, handling and storage systems for draff and wood chips
- Draff press and drying systems
- AET fuel feeding and dosing system
- AET Combustion System with Spreader Stoker and AET-Biograte
- AET draff combustion system
- Natural gas burner
- AET boiler with superheater and economizer
- AET SNCR DeNOx system
- Bag filter with lime injection system
- Flue gas system and stack
- Ash handling system
- Water/steam system
- Water treatment plant
- Steam turbine
- Condenser and cooling tower
- Electrical system
- PLC control system and SCADA system
- Boiler, turbine and service building
The biomass cogeneration plant is to be commissioned in 2013.
Further information
- Contracts have recently been awarded for the construction of a biomass combined heat and power plant at Rothes in Speyside that by 2013 will use the by-products of the whisky-making process for energy production. The Rothes project will burn the draff with woodchips to generate enough electricity to supply 9,000 homes. - “Fuel flexible biomass boilers are the key word in the modern biomass power and CHP plant industry. Our company has supplied plants that combust a wide range of biomass, such as agricultural and forest residues, poultry litter, meat and bone meal etc. Draff from the whisky industry is yet another interesting biomass source. Combusting such by-products is the ideal utilization of biomass for energy production”, says Hans Erik Askou, managing director and one of the founders of AET Read more
- AET made a presentation on the All Energy 2011 and the Power Gen 2011 conference on the topic: “Efficient Utilization of Distillery by Products” with the Helius CoRDe plant as a case study.
