AET Biomass and district heating:
Energi Randers Produktion, Denmark

After two retrofits made by AET, the district heating station in Denmark's 6th largest city, Randers, is reborn as a biomass CHP Station and can be fired by 100 % biomass fuel or 100 % coal - and any combination in between.

The original CHP station was built in 1982 and has served Randers with electricity and district heating for nearly 20 years. The station was originally commissioned as a spreader stoker coal fired plant by Aalborg Industries.

In 2002/2003 and 2007 - 2009, two retrofits were made by Aalborg Energi Technik a/s:

First retrofit: Co-firing mode coal and biomass
In 2002/2003 AET retrofitted the cogenerated station with an AET biomass dust firing system. The station could then operate in co-firing mode with min. 50% coal and max. 50% biomass fuel or 100% coal in single mode - and any combination in between.

The biomass fuel-system was designed for various granulated biomass products such as meat and bone meal, olive pits or shea nuts.

Second retrofit: 100 % biomass or 100 % coal
In 2007 - 2009 a substantial retrofit was made by AET as the plant is now able to fire 100% biomass or 100 % coal or any combination in between e.g. 70 % biomass and 30% coal; this was possible with AET combi spreaders.

A redesign of the two boilers was made, taking into account the narrow available space. Now the CHP station is able to burn uncontaminated wood chips as well as dusty fuels.

AET supply
AET handled the retrofitting of the two boilers as a supply consisting of:

  • Feasibility study
  • Fuel handling
  • AET fuel dosing and transport system
  • AET combi spreaders (coal and/or biomass)
  • Boiler refurbish of furnace, superheater and economizer
  • AET dust firing system
  • AET over fire air system
  • Ash handling system
  • Instrumentation
  • Engineering of control system
  • Erection of equipment
  • Design of electrical and control system
  • Commissioning

The second retrofit of Energi Randers Produktion was completed in 2009.
